Transparent Sizing Methodology

How This Solar Calculator Models Your System in Kerala

Unlike generic web calculators that use nationwide averages, our tool is calibrated specifically for Kerala's tropical solar irradiance (~4.0 peak sun hours/day) and KSEB's bi-monthly domestic tariff slabs (LT-1A).

01

What the Inputs Mean

Bi-Monthly Bill: KSEB bills residential consumers every two months. Telescopic tariff slabs increase steeply above 250 units bimonthly.

Roof Area: Modern high-efficiency 550W+ TOPCon modules require roughly 80–100 sq.ft of shadow-free rooftop space per 1 kW of installed capacity.

02

The Sizing Formula

Our model converts your bi-monthly bill into estimated kWh units consumed. It divides by 60 days to find your daily unit requirement, then applies an average generation factor of 4.0 kWh/day per 1 kW in Kerala.

Capacity (kW) = (Units/Month / 30) ÷ 4.0

03

PM Surya Ghar Subsidy

Central government direct bank transfer (DBT) subsidy under the national scheme:

  • • 1 kW System: ₹30,000
  • • 2 kW System: ₹60,000
  • • 3 kW & Above: ₹78,000 (Max Cap)
Last verified: September 2026. Regulations, tariffs, fees and application procedures may change; confirm the latest official KSEB/KSERC/MNRE information before making a final investment decision.
Why Calculator Output is an Engineering Estimate (Not a Guaranteed Quotation)

While our calculator provides accurate budgetary guidance based on standard conditions, actual rooftop generation and project investment depend on site-specific engineering factors that require a physical survey:

1. Shading & Obstacles: Nearby coconut trees, parapet walls, water tanks, or adjacent multistory houses cast shadows that affect string output.
2. Roof Tilt & Azimuth: South-facing roofs at 10°–12° yield peak generation. East/West roofs yield ~85%–90% of maximum output.
3. Sanctioned Connected Load: Under KSEB regulations, your solar inverter cannot exceed your sanctioned connected load without a formal load enhancement.
4. Cable Run & Structure Height: Elevated truss structures or longer DC/AC cable runs to the meter board affect final project cost.
5. Seasonal Monsoon Variability: June to August generation dips by 30%–45% during heavy overcast, balanced by high surplus generation in summer.
6. Fixed Charges: KSEB bills include fixed demand charges and meter rent, meaning bills are drastically reduced but not literally ₹0.00.
