On-Grid Solar Systems
Direct grid-tied solar systems that eliminate 90%–100% of your electricity bills through net metering.
What Is It?
An On-Grid (also called Grid-Tied) solar system is directly connected to your property’s electrical wiring and the public utility grid (such as KSEB).
It is by far the most popular and cost-effective solar solution for residential homes and businesses. It does not require expensive chemical battery banks; instead, the public power grid acts as your virtual energy storage.
During the day, your solar panels power your running appliances. Any excess electricity is sent to the grid through a specialized Bi-Directional Net Meter, earning you billing credits for power you use at night.
How Does It Work?
Your solar panels convert sunlight into DC electricity. The on-grid inverter converts this into synchronized AC electricity for your building.
Daytime Generation
Solar panels power your active appliances first
Excess Exported
Unused daytime power flows through the Net Meter into the grid
Nighttime Import
At night, your property draws power from the grid as normal
Net Billing
Your electric bill is calculated only on the net difference (Import − Export)
Key Benefits
Without the high expense of battery storage, on-grid systems offer the lowest cost per installed watt.
Drastically cuts your power bill from day one, typically paying for itself in 3 to 4 years.
Full eligibility for central government residential subsidies (up to ₹78,000 under PM Surya Ghar).
No batteries to top up with distilled water, replace every 4–5 years, or monitor for chemical degradation.
Where Is It Suitable?
On-grid solar is the ideal choice for most urban and suburban properties:
Things to Consider
Important facts to understand before installing an on-grid system:
Does Not Work During Power Cuts
Standard on-grid inverters shut off during a grid blackout (Anti-Islanding Protection) to prevent electrocuting utility workers repairing power lines.
Net-Metering Rules Apply
Export and banking policies depend on local utility regulations (e.g. KSERC in Kerala) and transformer capacity approvals.
Night Backup Requires Separate Solution
If you experience frequent prolonged power cuts, you will need a small inverter/UPS or a Hybrid Solar System with battery storage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does an on-grid solar system shut off during a power blackout?
This is a mandatory safety feature called "Anti-Islanding." If your panels kept pushing high-voltage electricity into the grid wires while the grid was down, utility line technicians working to repair the fault could be fatally electrocuted.
What happens on cloudy days or when I run a heavy air conditioner?
Solar power and grid power work together seamlessly. If your solar panels produce 2 kW and your air conditioner needs 3 kW, the system uses 2 kW from solar and draws the remaining 1 kW from the grid automatically without any flickering.
Can I add a battery to an on-grid system later?
Yes, if you choose a "Hybrid-Ready" inverter during initial installation or add an AC-coupled battery storage unit in the future.
